Air Conditioning.
You know your getting old / or going through menopause when you can't sleep through the night because you are in a PUDDLE of sweat. A/C pshaw. who needs it not me. I'm fine without it. Yep that's what I said for the last 14 years! Yep We have been in RI for 14 years. And we are by the water with beautiful breezes and no a/c.... Like I said who needs it......................
Well I'm learning as I grow (yes in width and brain power), I have NOTHING to prove. I have a big nose (hard to breath in humidity, thanks dad) and I work FULL TIME! I need a good nights sleep. Really do you care? do you really even give a rats ass? your probably glad there isn't a picture of the puppies being posted !(as cute as they are)
Anyway We got Central A/C installed in this place we call home (A snap shot of Kim's expression when she saw this dump is forever engraved in my brain) (sorry I got side tracked there for a moment!... ) yes we now have joined the energy sucking society with Central A/C. Do I feel guilty? NO.... How the hell can I feel guilty about one A/C unit when there are millions of barrels of oil being dumped into our beautiful oceans. Don't get me wrong I'm certainly not an energy hog. I'm a very conservative A/C user, it is currently set at 78 degrees. If I feel hot I will go outside run around the yard and come in to cool off.

Ok so here is the question...

Cell phone , Cable , Internet , Home phone , Movie rentals

We all do it, We all have them ... How much is really needed

We all have personal needs, so its not a question in need of answer... just something to ponder.

I know people who have internet at home... internet at work... and internet on there cell phone!~ Really do we really need all of that? I was almost that person today... I almost bit, I almost joined the elite group of people who feel the need to have internet at there finger tip at all time which in my mind equals I have nothing better to do with this $100.00 per month!

What happened to the simpler times when cable cost $30.00 and the phone was $11.00?

I want to go back to that time ... Really I do.

Greed
Greed has many ugly forms, To me it is a toxin, everyone experiences it at least once if not more in there life. Its very difficult to shake but your will is strong enough or your brain is smart enough to know better than to let it over come you.
Greed to me is when someone has something... something you want so badly but you just can't obtain... the only way to obtain it is to take it on the sneak, or consume it veraciously. Than when you have it you want more you want it all so no body else can have it or have more than you.
Now before you go thinking that I'm speaking of myself... back up... NO I AM NOT SPEAKING OF MYSELF! I am fortunate enough to have seen the consuming ability of greed in another ugly person and have seen it turn this person ugly with greed, not once not twice but far too many times. I could turn the whole situation around and become a far better ... far "greedier" individual and show this person how foolish they are ... BUT I WON'T!!!
The simple reason I won't is because I have a brain, I have willpower and most important I have Morals.
I hope in this life time that money ... yes this is about money ... I hope money never makes me be the person I speak about!
What I come away with is the knowledge and power to over come this toxin called greed. I would rather be broke and happy , in fact I think people need to step back and get back to simply pleasures in life and realize that it doesn't take money to make you happy. The more you make the more you spend, the more you spend the more you want, the more you want the greedier you become... see where I'm going with this?

What a windy night

My goodness!
Who says that ... my goodness, sounds like something my grandmother mable would say. Oh man what has my life become!
Any way ... what a night the wind was something out of a horror movie, or "the perfect storm" Its still windy but nothing like last night. It was horrible, You could hear it coming right up the river, the trees were a swaying and swaying, ooops wrong story, actually the trees were creaking and when I looked out this morning the yard (which by the way I spent every night this week after work RAKING) was FULL of branches and twigs!

On the bright side, we didn't lose power, no trees or branches fell on our house, our yard is not flooded from high tide, and my breakfast which consisted of 2 eggs over medium was fantastic!
What does that have to do with the storm? Absolutely nothing, but I thought I would indulge as to how lucky I am to have someone that will cook me 2 eggs over medium just about every Sunday! So basically LIFE IS GOOD!

Puppy Socialization

Who would have thought I would be taking another puppy to "socialization" class. Call me crazy! I wanted to be sure Willie was "socialized" so I took him up the street today to play with other puppies, (Its a class every Saturday) He did fine but Jack was too "old" to go, can't be over 6 months I think, Jacks 10 months, so he stayed home....
Willie still has a little trouble with car rides, its called Puke yep can't hold it in, started just driving down the street and boom out it comes. Hopefully he will get better... I'm sure he will.

I have come to realize that the best thing has happened for GIGI, she struggled a good part of her short life, she was very strong... she was a trooper, even on 3 legs she just was a happy girl. I hoped to be able to help her with the surgery but came to realize after the final x-ray that with both hips it would be a crippling issue. My only peace is knowing she is no longer in pain and finally at peace.

Gigi will always have a very special place in our heart. She was only 10 months but it was an amazing time we had with her and never will be forgotten. I learned alot from that little girl, Its amazing how these guys can just "live in the moment" and over come so many things. (we could learn alot from our furry friends)

We decided it was best to not prolong getting Jack (and myself) a new buddy, I will say the breeder did step up to the plate and do the right thing. We now have Willie.... He is white/creme in color and it was a little odd getting used to him, (hard to explain) but we are all coming together very well.

Willie aquired his name because he decided to "sing" us to sleep the first couple of nights and his singing / howling wasn't all that good, so we decided willie after Willie Nelson....

He is going to be a good buddy for us all.

Surgery

Today is Gigi's Surgery.

Its been a real long haul... Poor girl,

She has been unable to put weight on her left rear leg for over 3 months now. We have tried to give her anti inflammatory for relief and the pills give her acid reflux, so than she won't eat. The vet switched the medication however the new meds give her the same effect. We have been trying everything just to keep weight on her... Shes such a little thing to begin with so its been a long haul.

So today she has her surgery for Legg Perthes FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) She is having the double whammy ... she is also being spayed.

I hope she is strong enough to beat this thing... Its time for her to be able to be a puppy and run and jump pain free!

Snow Thrower

I finally broke down and bought a SNOW THROWER. The first storm (December) really just did me in. I said to myself WHY? WHY? WHY? and so no more will I shovel the END OF THE DRIVEWAY! *that was the worst* No more will I shovel PATHS FOR THE PUPPIES! * that took forever*, and No more will I carry snow half way across the patio to put it on the other side because in the spring when it melts the piles have to be in a SPECIFIC spot to prevent ice/ run off!( Of course some might call me ANAL like that) Anyway, SEARS was where the purchase took place and now my shed is FULL bursting at the seems 3 lawn mowers, alot of crap and a snow blower (thats just in one shed) the other has Bikes, tools, left over motor home crap (just in case you never know) and lots and lots of other stuff (ask jeff and kim ) its like the CLOWN CAR!

So what now? Spring will come, and the Snow Thrower will be situated to the Back of the shed. The lawn mowers will move to the front and life will go on. So really should I have broke down and bought a snow thrower or should I be looking for a house in a warmer state? HMMMMMM

Which by the way? is there really a better place to live? After all the storm of the century is happening right now.... NOT HERE MIND YOU, but in Washington/Virginia area they are expected to get 24 to 30 inches.

Thanksgiving was GRAND...
OMG The food was fantastic. ( I can say that because I wasn't the cook) Chef Lin did a wonderful job, Pork ... MOIST TURKEY... GRAVY (home made of course) Fresh carrots, Peas, Fresh String beans, corn, Sweat Potatoes, Mashed potatoes, Pearl Onions, 2 Types of stuffing ... fruit and meat. TO DIE FOR. I am sure there was more, but My mind is so full just listing those....
THAN desert hit the table and it never ended. Turkey Cup cakes, Cookies, Cranberry pie, Apple pie, Pumpkin pie, Chocolate Creme Pie, Pound cake ,Dirt cake (above) And once again I'm sure I'm missing something. But for dinner last night I had the deserts that I missed in the afternoon. MMMMMM topped with Ice Cream of course! I THINK I PUT ON A POUND OR TWO........

Yes its been a while,
I've been busy as I'm sure you all have been.
News:
I found out Gigi has Hip Dysplasia (HD). I found this out 4 weeks ago when she came up Lame in her left rear leg. I had hoped it was just a strain, but when I took her to the vet he insisted on an X-ray right away. My vet has the ability to do a digital xray and we had the result with in minutes, It was clear... Grade 1 Hip Dysplasia. I didn't know what to do ...
I have since learned more about HD than I ever thought I would need to know. It appears as if Gigi has torn cartilage due to the looseness of her hip. The vet wants the cartilage to heal before making any determination on the HD.
As I understand it She could possibley grow through this and be fine. Or she could continue to show signs of problems and need surgery. We of course are hoping for the first!
So for the last 2 weeks we have been in Heal Mode... ie... Walk Gigi 50' pick her up and carry her and walk Jack the rest of the way. I walk them 2 times a day , morning and afternoon (always have) and now Gigi is walking much further and I can see signs of her limp slowly going away... The hardest thing is to keep the 2 of them from playing so rough and romping on each other, the twists and turns are what will hurt her. Also running on uneven ground, so She has to go out on a leash or by herself so they don't get to running.
I haven't had to much time to take any new photo's since I'm usually carrying Gigi or sitting on the ground trying to keep them from pouncing on each other. It may be a long haul but we will struggle through.
I'll try to get some new pics this weekend but for now I'll leave you with these...

Jack weighs 12.0 pounds and GiGi weighs 7.6 pounds as of 7:30 last night when they went for there FINAL vaccine!!!

But that is o.k. They are doing great, Almost potty trained and time for there second hair cut.
Supposed to rain all day today so They might not be getting there weekly / bi-weekly bath until tomorrow. (bi-weekly because sometimes I'm just not feeling it and they just don't need it)

The Weekend that Jack became a man

No he didn't get lucky...

But he lifted his leg to go pee. REALLY BIG LIFT I thought he was going to fall over.

Than His nuggets dropped... or as they say in doggie world his testicles descended. Now you might be saying... How the hell does she know his nuggets dropped! Well people its fairly simple Jack loves to have his belly rubbed so its basically a daily occurrence and when He rolled over I saw 2 bumps and said HEY THOSE WEREN'T THERE YESTERDAY! So I say He's a man.

You didn't expect a picture of his nuggets now did you? PEOPLE REALLY!

The above pictures were taken at THE INN BY THE SEA. I have to say it is by far one of the nicest places I have ever stayed at. I would go back and recommend any one who needs a getaway to give it a go.

What a lovely title for a blog

So I go outside the other day and see these black turds on the outside table, I thought to myself "MOUSE TURDS" goddamnit what am I paying pest control for!!! Well they are outside so I guess thats ok. I proceed to open the umbrella for the outside table and phewmmmmmm something goes wizzing past me... WHAT THE BLOODY HELL??????..... A freaking bat.!

I grabbed my camera and proceeded to follow it over to the apple tree where it flew to and snapped the following Photo.

It must have had a good night of bug catching and was sleeping in the umbrella... Sorry fella go find a new home.

Went back about 10 minutes later to show lin and he was gone, She looked at me like I was crazy... But I had photos for proof!!! (even though I am probably crazy)

Puppy Walk

FIRST PUPPY WALK
Sorry no pics, I wasn't sure how it would go so I didn't bring the camera.
It went surprisingly well, I've been leash walking them around the yard and they have done O.K.
Decided to take them out on the road this morning. Head up... Chin out... or is it Chest out... which ever I exuded massive amounts of confidence and off we went.
They trotted there little legs along side me like ole pros, as if we had done it thousands of times before and it was just another stroll in the park.
Came back big lovings for everyone and cookies too.
Now the reason I'm so pleased is because 3 days ago I could literally pull Jack by the leash and he would just sit there and let me drag him like a mop across the ground and not budge. He can be stubborn. But persistence and confidence do pay off ... Cesar Milan was right.

So the pine trees have been my nemesis. Gigi considers them her own private haven. She runs under them plays under them, eats them, collects pine cones ... its all so very cute. THAN COMES THE SAP!!!!!!
Why jack is never sticky is beyond me, but GIGI is like a big ball of glue.
Remedy to remove sap...
Peanut butter? not liking that.
Soap? Not working so well
Brake cleaner? it will work but I'm kindof liking these guys and want them around for a long time.

OLIVE OIL... Hell I'll try it.
so I made a GIGI salad last night. And I didn't use just any olive oil... Only the best EXTRA VIRGIN Olive Oil. She is ya know just 3 months and is ya know still a VIRGIN!(will always be for that matter)

She even has a glowing conditioned coat now. I might just try it on myself!

There I am floating in the pool soaking up the sun, reading a good book Sail by James Patterson, Lin is in the house, puppies are napping all is quiet when all of the sudden: YIIIIIPE YIIIIPE YIIIIPE YIIIIPE.... For those who don't recognize that would be puppy talk for HELP ME!!!!!!!!!! Now remember.... I'M FLOATING IN THE POOL, you just can't run to help when you are FLOATING IN THE POOL.... YIIIIPE YIIIIIIPE YIIIIIIIIIPE Continues. as I see Lin go running to help who ever is making this god awful racket, It continues YIIIIPE YIIIIPE YIIIIPE, and I continue to try to get out of the pool, it felt like S-L-O-W-M-O-T-I-O-N at its finest!!!

Not until after did I find out that Lin was also napping and when she ran to help, she almost ran into the door casing because she was still napping... and running at the same time!

Finally out of the pool (YIPING STILL CONTINUED) I make it in the house to see Lin trying to free Jacks leg from the crate (thought these things were supposed to be safe) Finally He's free. Some how the front of the crate had enough of a space that he got his leg down in there and couldn't get it out, Being the emotional type he sort of got scared and started his yiiiping, Lin says he's alot like me... go figure. HMMMMMM.

Any way its not the first time its happened, Its just the first time its happened for soooo loooong, which honestly was probably a matter of 30 seconds or less just felt like an eternity. So we had to modify the crate and removed the front panel / door. (so much for crate training)

As you can see the front section is now gone, they still consider it there bed and we never closed the door anyway, just wanted them to be accustomed to it for camping purposes.

No swimming yesterday for the pups, maybe a bath today.

no pictures to show, 1... because I was the one helping the kids in the pool to swim 2... because Lin was laughing at me too much to take a picture, She says I'm a nervous nelly!!!

They both did fine, Gigi started paddling for all she was worth. Jack on the other hand started a stroll paddle until he realized that it wasn't enough to keep his fat ass afloat so he better kick it into 2nd gear, than he was all set.

I'm sure if its warm today we will get in another swim or 2 and pictures will follow.

For now a Cactus in bloom from our garden...

Its been a long, cold, rainey May and June, (and june isn't even over) Now I'm not wishing time away ... Don't get me wrong, I'm just wishing for warm weather. I know its coming but people Its JUNE... and the other night it dropped to 40 degrees. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?
Ok yes I chose to live in NewEngland, So I trade the Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Fires, Tornadoes,(floods?) naw I could still be flooded so scratch that one, but all the rest for this cool weather, and I do mean COOL. As in Muy Frio...

I often tell friends that a part of me is gay, even though I've been happily married to my wife for 12 years. What I mean is that in April 2003 I donated a kidney to my older brother David, who is gay. The transplant took place at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics -- and it was, in a very real sense, a miraculous event for our entire family.

So when David called me last Friday excited about the Iowa Supreme Court decision making same-sex marriage legal, I wasn't surprised. "You know what this means, don't you?" he asked. "It means we can visit those we love when they're dying in the hospital; it means we're finally treated like family."

Most hospitals in America only allow spouses and immediate family members to visit a patient during a medical emergency, when a patient is unconscious or in critical condition after a car accident, heart attack or kidney failure, for example. These are the moments when our spouses are most needed, the moments when life and death decisions are made -- and, if necessary, goodbyes are said. My brother, whose kidneys failed when he was in his 30s, understands these moments.

Of course, this is just one example of how Friday's decision changes the lives of gay and lesbian couples in Iowa. As the court wrote in its unanimous decision, the 12 plaintiffs (six couples) expressed "the disadvantages and fears they face each day due to the inability to obtain a civil marriage in Iowa." These include: "the legal inability to make many life and death decisions affecting their partner, including decisions related to health care . . . the inability to share in their partners' state-provided health insurance, public employee pension benefits, and many private-employer-provided benefits and protections," and the denial of "several tax benefits."

"Yet, perhaps the ultimate disadvantage expressed in the testimony of the plaintiffs," the court continued, "is the inability to obtain for themselves and for their children the personal and public affirmation that accompanies marriage." In other words, they desire to be recognized as married couples, as a "family" to use my brother's word.

With Friday's ruling -- which upheld a lower-court ruling that rejected a state law restricting marriage to a union between a man and woman -- that desire has become law. As early as April 24, gays and lesbians will be able to exchange vows in civil services.

As for religious attitudes toward same-sex marriage, the court respectfully, and in typically plain-spoken manner, explains that "the sanctity of all religious marriages celebrated in the future will have the same meaning as those celebrated in the past. The only difference is civil marriage will now take on a new meaning that reflects a more complete understanding of equal protection of the law."

My brother and I and millions of Iowans are proud of our state at this moment. Others aren't. There are many (some of them beloved family members) who believe marriage, civil or otherwise, should only be between a man and woman; others aren't opposed to same-sex marriage but don't think the courts should mandate it. Indeed, there's a movement here in Iowa as in other states to amend the state constitution to define marriage as a union solely between a man and woman. (Such an amendment couldn't get on the ballot here until 2012 at the earliest.)

To this, I would simply ask why? Why blemish our constitution and narrow our definition of equal protection when our state has been a leader on such historic civil-rights issues as slavery, interracial marriage, women's rights, and desegregation?

As the court wrote in its decision: "We are firmly convinced the exclusion of gay and lesbian people from the institution of civil marriage does not substantially further any important governmental objective. The legislature has excluded a historically disfavored class of persons from a supremely important civil institution without a constitutionally sufficient justification."

Here's to marriage, a "supremely important civil institution." And here's to including, not excluding, kind-hearted people like my brother David, who want nothing more than to find the right person, settle down, and one day perhaps get married.

My Vacuum Cleaner broke...
Now that may not seem to be a big thing but it took me 3 different vacuum cleaners and many years to find this vacuum that does the best job ever, It has filters and a bag so the odor is minimal as long as you change the filters and bag as needed.
It works like a charm and today the power head BROKE>
The motor stopped working, I took the hole thing apart cleaned all the tobey and ruby hair from it. (there was a lot!!) and put is all back together and stil NOTHING>
Called the vacuum shop and they are closed until Tuesday.
Its not a total loss, just an expense I would prefer not to have!

For those who don't know yet....

Tobey is no longer with us, I'm sorry you have to read it on a blog.

She has been a loyal friend to us and is truly missed.

When we opened our hearts to Tobey after Terry was gone, I had no idea how attached I would become, It really wasn't until after I lost my Ruby girl that I found out how loyal Tobey was. Yes she had her moments...

~ Every Thunderstorm that we sat together in the weee hours of the morning ~

~ Winter storms when the plow truck would go by and shake the earth and the flashing lights would scare her, I found myself sitting with her again in the weee hours of the morning ~

~She ran like the "wind" and certainly could jump like a gazelle, who would have guessed with that sausage like figure that she could even get our of her own way. Never judge a book by its cover.

I believe we heard her bark 1 or 2 times but her eyes told all she had to say. She became my shadow, She was the best travel dog, and loved going camping with us, she always knew when it was camping time, she would stand by the "white thing" just to make sure we didn't forget her.

She was my Saturday compadre and fell in love with the Jetta, it became her favorite travel car The back seat was her domain and she would happily sit there and wait for me to run all my silly errands, keeping a watchful eye out for me to return to drive her around town.

We had to make this decision due to a recent diagnosis of bladder cancer, We did not want her to suffer. I stayed with her as she began her next journey ... she is at peace.

Thank you Tobey for helping me through some difficult times.

Woman comes in with a sewing machine noise. We surmise that the chains and tensioners are sloppy and upsell Timing chain and tensioners. (not abnormal for this model Jaguar) After taking it all apart we find no play in the chains and the plastic guides on the tensioners are tight also. Not wanting to put it all back together with new tensioners and chains and have the "same" noise (that would be very bad) we dig a little deeper to find............... The "c" clip in diagram (#3 in diag) has fallen off, The "C" clip holds the rod (#4 in diag)to the top of the piston(#1 in diag). In the second photo the piston wall is completely scored and that is from the rod scraping along side the wall.

First estimate for new engine $17,000.00

Second estimate for used engine $9500.00

Third estimate for sleeving piston wall and basic overhaul $8100.00 SOLD

The human body has not changed for 100’s of years. Other than the outside appearance constantly being different. The internals of the Human body work the same today as they did 100’s of years ago.
The Automotive is changing constantly, bigger, better, faster, stronger. More compression, better braking, different emissions to make it less pollutant, stronger restrictions for safety causing over 5 airbags in the car for crashes. Some running on gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, hydrogen and still others electric.
I could go on and on and on, but let me just make my point and shut up…

The point:
Why is it that doctors who specialize in certain parts of the human body can repeatedly misdiagnose ailments, yet get away with charging an office visit for consultation, charge you for a possible cure via a prescription, charge you for a follow up to see if what they told you to do even made a difference in your mind. Sometimes even recommend surgery and charge even more money for something that may or may not make a difference however always leaves your life at risk and you have to sign a waiver saying “that’s OK”
Yet automotive “technicians” as they are called these days, you no longer can just be a mechanic because you need to have a degree to find out how these things tick since there are more computers in today's vehicle than there where in the first space shuttle sent to the moon. (but I’m getting off track) so auto technicians have 1 shot to diagnose a problem or maybe many problems. 1 shot that’s all, 1 hour one measly diagnostic fee, and yet we (in the automotive business) are thieves. Once we provide the diagnosis we are sometimes met with much controversy. IE… “you want how much to fix my car” or “well my brother (or any other important member of the family that obviously knows much more than our educated technicians will ever know)said it’s the cadillac constrainer and yada yada yada yada !!! or can I get a discount because I bought the car here and I service here. (try that with your doctor) etc and so forth.
While I’m on the subject, once the work is started with which an estimate has been provided based on that 1 diagnostic fee provided, we can not waiver from the estimate, we are scum of the earth if while performing said repair we find…. Oh I don’t know SLUDGE in the engine suggesting lack of maintenance. And this would be our fault how? OK I’m getting a bit off track yet again…
I guess my rant is why do the doctors get all the respect when the human body hasn’t changed in 100’s of years and most doctors specialize in only one are of the body.
A technician has to know the ins and outs of every piece of equipment on your automobile and I don’t know of many technicians that just specialize in one part of it. Imagine that? You think it cost a lot to get your car fixed know, imagine if you had to go to 4 different auto technicians … that would be a hoot!!!!

This is what happens when the piston gets too close to the spark plug. We think its piston slap, but Roush is telling us to check it out with a new plug first.

Broken Springs

I know I know I know... I'm wierd... But hey its what I do.

So I thought I would share...

The picture you see is a broken valve spring on a 2003 Discovery. Car was still running, didn't cause any compression change, threw us for a loop... Thought it was plugs and wires at first still a misfire after new plugs and wires, so took off the cam covers and started poking around and found the busted spring. Had one kicking around from another cylinder head just hanging out in the corner collecting dust so put it in and voila misfire gone. Customer paying for it.

The second picture is a coolant leak at the back of an engine. Had to R&R the transmission to take a peak back there and see what was leaking, thought maybe a freeze plug. Found this plate at the back of the engine with a gasket leaking. Full size Range Rover 2005 with a BMW engine. Extended warranty covering it.
